Come solo or bring a friend. Leave with stories you love telling, new connections, and the confidence to say, “What are we doing next?”

Let's Talk Travel

By Tyra Thompson • October 7, 2026
The group chat has chosen the destination, shared the hotel videos, and discussed the outfits. Then somebody asks about deposits. Suddenly, the dates don’t work. Somebody needs to check with somebody. Somebody else has stopped responding altogether. And there you are, still wanting to travel. It’s understandable to want familiar company, especially when you’re going somewhere new. But if your friends aren’t ready, joining a hosted group by yourself may give you another way to take the trip. Before you decide, here’s what to understand. Coming by yourself doesn’t mean organizing everything yourself When you travel independently, you’re generally responsible for researching, booking, and coordinating the details. That can include accommodations, transfers, activities, and figuring out what happens if plans change. A hosted group trip can take some of that coordination off your plate. Depending on the package, there may be arranged transportation, scheduled experiences, shared meals, and a host or local team to contact. The important phrase is depending on the package . Ask what is included, who will be available during the trip, and what assistance they provide. A hosted itinerary doesn’t automatically include every meal, every transfer, or someone accompanying you during all free time. Clear expectations help you feel prepared. Choose a group that fits your pace Liking the same destination is a good starting point. You also want to understand how the group will experience it. Ask about group size, early departures, walking, downtime, and whether activities are optional. Find out if the atmosphere is centered on nightlife, cultural exploration, relaxation, or a combination. If you enjoy dinner and conversation but need quiet time afterward, that matters. You shouldn’t have to become the loudest person at the table to feel included. Connection can happen gradually. A conversation on the ride to an outing or a shared laugh over dinner can be a comfortable beginning. Make your room choice separately Joining a trip alone doesn’t automatically mean sharing a room. Ask whether single occupancy is available and how it affects the price. If roommate matching is offered, understand how the process works, when matches are made, and what happens if a match isn’t available. At The Paradise Lounge, our roommate matching process includes a questionnaire, with matching planned around 120 days before travel. Travelers can exchange contact information and get acquainted. Before agreeing to share, discuss sleep schedules, room temperature, cleanliness, and personal space. Honest conversations are much easier before you’re both standing beside the thermostat. Picture what the experience could look like Imagine arriving in Ghana by yourself with a confirmed transfer, clear meeting instructions, and planned group experiences. You don’t yet know everyone. But you know where you’re going, whom to contact, and when you’ll have opportunities to meet the group. That structure may help you feel more comfortable taking the first step. You can ask whether there are introductions before departure, such as a group call or chat. Getting familiar with names and faces can make arrival feel less intimidating. Tell your advisor what concerns you Sometimes “I’m nervous about going alone” really means “I don’t know how to navigate the airport.” Sometimes it means “I’m concerned about sharing a room.” Sometimes it means “Will I feel comfortable with this group?” Those questions deserve specific answers. Ask them before paying a deposit so you can make an informed choice. Would you join by yourself, prefer to bring someone, or need more reassurance first? Tell us which feels right for you. Your friends can take their time deciding while you explore your options.
